Postcard Paintings

My first postcard painting

What is a Postcard Painting?

A “postcard painting” is a mixed media artwork that features a vintage postcard repurposed into an original landscape. My goal with this series is to spotlight the history of each postcard while also exploring the correspondence practices of the past. When creating a new painting, each card is carefully sourced, researched, and logged to keep track of its manufacturing history, imagery, sender, and recipient.

I do my best not to tamper with the cards in each piece, many of which are more than 100 years old, and create a work of art that will last as long as the antique card itself. Each postcard painting is a 9x12” acrylic painting featuring a repurposed postcard affixed on stock paper which is then varnished for protection, placed under glass, and encased in a custom-made 11 x 14” wood frame.
