Viewing the Countryside

$250.00

This piece is titled “Viewing the Countryside” and features a vintage postcard ca. 1909.

This postcard includes an image of a group of fox hunters driving a carriage across a river; their foxhounds can be seen swimming in the water. On the front, the postcard has the caption “5525 Viewing the Countryside” and the initials G.M.S. are scrawled in pencil.

Fox hunting with hounds is a sport steeped in tradition with a long history dating back to 16th century in England. The Englishman Robert Brooke first brought the equestrian sport to the Americas, to the English colony of Maryland specifically, in 1650 — along with his own pack of foxhounds.

Throughout its history, the sport has met controversy for its practice of hunting red foxes, although some contend it’s an important part of rural culture and a method of conservation. Today in the U.S., it is common practice to chase the targeted fox without ending its life, and the sport has also become known as fox chasing.
